The Cultural Basis of Teaching English as an International Language in Korea ¢À Sandra Lee McKay will discuss the characteristics of an international language and examine the wide use of English today, as well as examining its continued spread. She will then explore how culture plays a role in language teaching: in the selection of vocabulary items, the teaching of politeness, the choice of topics in materials, and the selection of teaching methods.
¢À This part of the talk will focus on how the teaching of culture might be handled in a Korean context. In order to do this, Ms. McKay will illustrate some of the dangers of dealing with culture in language classrooms and suggest some solutions to these problems.
