English KnowHow
Motivating students is the biggest challenge in an EFL environment and materials, contexts, and activities that focus on ESL can exacerbate the problem. In this talk, Angela Blackwell will show how the KnowHow series addresses these problems by:
- using texts and contexts that have an international focus
- providing solid support for grammar presentations and speaking practice
- presenting language and strategies that are useful to international students
- encouraging students to personalize language

The Cultural Basis of Teaching English as an International Language in Korea
¢À Sandra Lee McKay will discuss the characteristics of an international language and examine the wide use of English today, as well as examining its continued spread. She will then explore how culture plays a role in language teaching: in the selection of vocabulary items, the teaching of politeness, the choice of topics in materials, and the selection of teaching methods.

¢À This part of the talk will focus on how the teaching of culture might be handled in a Korean context. In order to do this, Ms. McKay will illustrate some of the dangers of dealing with culture in language classrooms and suggest some solutions to these problems.
